Church Bible Reader

As a Baptized Christian, in my youth I was active in church, performing such duties as lighting candles and passing collection plates and communion trays. For a time, I was the weekly Bible reader. That is, I read aloud from a big Bible (on the lectern shown here) the passage on which the minister, the Rev. Joe Nevius, had based his sermon.

In this role I developed my skills in appearing confidently before an audience, learning biblical texts, reading aloud and giving voice to the rich poetic cadences of the King James version, learning to project my voice to the rear of an auditorium, and so on-skills I still use, although I am now a Humanist.
